Mission Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción de Acuña, or Mission Concepcion as it is known by locals, was established in East Texas in 1716 by Franciscan Friars. Originally meant to be the headquarters of the conversion of the Hasinai to Catholicism, the mission was moved in 1731 to San Antonio, Texas. After being relocated the residents of Mission Concepcion were mostly people of the Pajalats Tribe.
During a 30 minute engagement on October 28, 1832 the Battle of Concepcion was fought between Mexican troops under Colonel Domingo Ugartechea and Texian insurgents led by James Bowie and James Fannin. The battle is described as the first major engagement of the Texas Revolution.
Mission Concepcion remains the best preserved of the Texas missions and Catholic Mass is still held every Sunday.
