Rio Grande Gorge 13

The Rio Grande Gorge is a rift valley in northern New Mexico where the Rio Grande follows a tectonic chasm. The Gorge is approximately 50 miles (80 km) long and runs from the northwest to the southeast near Taos, New Mexico and through the basalt (extrusive igneous volcanic rock) flows of the the Taos Plateau Volcanic field. The Gorge reaches its deepest point of 800 feet (240 m) near the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge which is approximately 10 miles (16 km) northwest of Taos, New Mexico.

The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge is a steel deck arch bridge that stretches across the Rio Grande Gorge at 565 feet (172 m) above the river below. The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge is the seventh highest bridge in the United States and is the 82nd highest bridge in the world.

Sadly, the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge is the site of numerous suicides and attempted suicides which has local authorities looking into ways of preventing future attempts.
