Earth Week Stock Features Day 4

Journal Entry: Fri Apr 26, 2013, 12:41 AM
Earth Day Week 2013

Day Four

In honor of Earth Day 2013 I have planned an extensive stock feature including wonderful flora and fauna stocks divided according to their specific Biomes.

Biome
bi·ome [bahy-ohm]
noun
Ecology.
a complex biotic community characterized by distinctive plant and animal species which thrive under climatic conditions native to their specific region

I originally had planned on this feature to be posted only on Earth Day, however, it has become to massive for a single feature. I am barely on Grasslands and the feature is already a mile long! So, Earth Day has turned into Earth Week! Yay!! I personally feel it should be Earth Week, or even Earth Month! Heck, let's make every day Earth Day!

Please be sure to follow all rules set forth by each stock provider featured if you use any stocks below!

Scheduled Features *Subject to Change
Monday, April 22 - Chaparral/Scrub & Desert
Tuesday, April 23 - Wetlands & Grasslands
Wednesday, April 24 - Lakes & Ponds
:bulletgreen:Thursday, April 25 - Oceans & Seas
Friday, April 26 - Coniferous Forests, Deciduous Forests & Rain Forests
Saturday, April 27 - Tundra, Land Caves, Mountains
Sunday, April 28 - Arctic & Antarctic

Due to the complexities of Earth there are many different Biomes all over our planet. When you are well within one Biome it is pretty easy to tell which one you are in (i.e. you know a desert from a tropical rainforest). However, once you are nearer the edge of one Biome things can get a bit more difficult as two or more Biomes will blend together until you are well out of the previous Biome. For example, The Pacific Northwest is home to the gorgeous Redwood National and State Parks. One Biome found within the Redwood Park is the Old-Growth Coast Redwood Forest that gradually grows it's way into the Oak Woodlands. The first few miles inside the Oak Woodlands from coming out of the Old-Growth Redwoods will not be as easy to differentiate as the trees are all blended together.

That being said, there will be a few stocks featured from one Biome that could also be located in or near another Biome.

Oceans & Seas

Large bodies of saltwater with diverse lifeforms.

Oceans vs. Seas – What are the differences?

Oceans are massive bodies of salt water that cover approximately 70% of our Earth. The five oceans are actually one large body of water that is interconnected called the World Ocean. Seas, on the other hand, are smaller and are partially enclosed by land. There are over 100 bodies of water listed as seas.

List of Oceans by Size in Square Miles

    1)      Pacific Ocean – 63,780,000 sq mi

    2)      Atlantic Ocean – 41,080,000 sq mi

    3)      Indian Ocean – 28,350,000 sq mi

    4)      Southern (Antarctic) Ocean – 7,848,000 sq mi

    5)      Arctic Ocean – 5,427,000 sq mi

List of Five Largest Seas in Square Miles

    1)      Mediterranean Sea – 967,300 sq mi

    2)      Caribbean Sea – 1,063,000 sq mi

    3)      South China  Sea – 1,351,000 sq mi

    4)      Bering Sea – 884,900 sq mi

    5)      Gulf of Mexico – 617,800 sq mi

Lakes and Ponds

Small inland bodies of water.
Ponds vs. Lakes – They are so similar, how can you tell which is which?

Contrary to popular belief, size has nothing to do with the classification of ponds and lakes. Most people think that a lake is simply bigger than a pond and that is how you tell. Not true!

I took three years of Geology at University and we discussed Limnology, the study of bodies of water, at great lengths. According to Limnology, ponds are shallow enough that the sun can reach to the bottom and could support plant growth across the entire surface. This plant growth area is called a photic zone. Lakes, however, are deep enough that the sun cannot reach the bottom. The deep areas where the sun cannot reach is called the aphotic zone. Do not let this confuse you; some lakes will have patches of plant growth such as lily pads in shallow areas near the shore and there are some ponds that never grow plant life although they have the photic zone that could support it.

With that being said, there are bodies of water that are relatively small across, some less than half an acre, but that are deep enough to have aphotic zones making them classified as lakes. Alternatively, there are very large bodies of water that many local residents will call a lake but that are technically ponds due to their photic zones and plant life that cover the surface of the water.

By the way, I added Arctic and Antarctic to the schedule!

Update

New Stock Coming Very Soon

For the last few weeks we have been gathering items for a new stock shoot. I have one item left to arrive and then we are ready to set up the studio equipment for a really great LOTR inspired Elven Ranger series!

Seth has a new recurve bow and arrow set, a beautiful medieval tunic,  a chainmail tunic, a sword, dagger, axe/hatchet, drinking horn, and a few other accessories. This will be a pretty epic shoot that we hope to try to get a few outdoors action shots as well.

So, we hope you all will enjoy the new shoot when we get to take it.

Royally Pissed Off

Addition of Obvious Stock Rule

Thanks to one seriously fucked up individual I need to add a very obvious rule to my stock rules.

DO NOT USE MY STOCK OF 10 YR OLD SETH IN SEXUAL AND/OR BONDAGE "ART." PERIOD!

This "artist" flat out ignored my telling him, on our Native American DD, that  he could not use Seth's images due to his gallery showing art of a minor boy being tortured and sodomized with visible penetration. He used Seth as one of the characters beating a little boy! Without even crediting me, to boot! I have reported the artist and every artwork in his gallery. I am extremely close to reporting this freak to The Center for Missing and Exploited Children; trust me, they investigate every claim!!

CONTEST ENDED!!

Christmas Elf Contest
:xmas::rudolph::santa:

October 20, 2012 thru December 31, 2012

CONTEST HAS OFFICIALLY ENDED!!

I was initially going to wait until November 1st to hold our first annual Christmas contest as to not interfere with Halloween and Thanksgiving, but since not every country celebrates these holidays I decided to start it early for those of you who do not celebrate/partake in Halloween/Thanksgiving festivities.

Contest Rules
:bulletred: You must use at least ONE of our Christmas Elf stock photos.

A small sample of our Christmas Elf stock:

You can use other stock in your entry but the source must be legitimate stock from deviantART, stock.xch or other free stock sites, or a stock marketplace such as Fotolia.com.

You cannot use images you found on Google. Using Google images is a violation of dA's TOU and is also copyright infringement.

:bulletred: The theme can be interpreted anyway you wish as long as you use the required stock! You can do your cultural or country's customs or Hollywood's interpretation of Christmas elves. Christmas festivities are borrowed from Pagan customs anyway, so feel free to interpret the theme however you want.

:bulletred: Your entry must be a visual art piece, no literature. You may create your entry in either digital or traditional media.

:bulletred: Your entry must be a NEW submission created between October 20, 2012 and December 31, 2012, 11:59PM CST

:bulletred: You are allowed up to THREE entries, but obviously can only win once!

:bulletred:You must state in your artist description that your piece is for the Christmas Elf Contest and link to this journal.

Having trouble finding stock to accompany your Christmas manipulation? Check out ~hyenacub-stock's Holiday Stock-O-Rama journal feature of all things Christmasy... with a dash of Hanukkah!

Native American Contest

RESULTS ARE IN

After some intense deliberation, and a few disagreements worthy of a Political Debate, we have decided on the winners of the Native American Contest!

This was probably the hardest decision we have had to make for any sort of contest, on or off deviantART; all of the entries were just remarkable.

There is just so much talent on deviantART... I am thankful I did not have to compete against you guys!

Contest Recap

For those of you who may have been hiding beneath a rock for the last three months the contest required the use of at least one of our Native American Indian stock images. You were allowed to interpret the theme in whatever manner you wished and were allowed to use any additional, legitimate stock that you wanted. We allowed up to three entries per deviant.

Tagged by a Muppet!

Journal Entry: Tue Aug 14, 2012, 5:32 PM
I was tagged by a cute muppet!

Nichelle, aka =charligal-stock tagged me!

1. You must post these rules.
2. Answer the questions the tagger set for you, and create new questions for the people you tag to answer.
3. You have to choose 10 people to tag and post their icons on your journal
4. Go to their pages and tell them you have tagged her/him.
5. No tag backs.
6. No crap in the tagging section about "you are tagged if you're reading this." You have to tag 10 people.

1. Who is your favourite artist and why?
Sir Frederic Leighton, Edmund Blair Leighton, Sir Francis Bernard Dicksee, John William Waterhouse, etc... I love the Pre-Rafaelites and the style of art they created. I love art that tells a story and that is rich in context and content. I love very detailed art. I tend to create art inspired by these talented artists.

2. When did you last make something and what was it?
I have actually been pretty busy with my art after neglecting it for a year in favor of my stock account. I have four new pieces that I am quite proud of: Sea-Crossed Lovers, Levana's Amulet, A Boy and His Dragon, and Lady Aubergine's Garden.

Please go check them out and let me know what you think!

3. What is your favourite word and why?
"Oy!" It isn't much of a word but I use it all the time! I'm Jewish and it is a Yiddish term meaning "Oh!" Sometimes I'll use "Oy vey!" which means "Oh my!" or "Oy vey iz mir!" which loosely translates to "Oh woe is me!"

4. If a genie said you could have anything in the world for a wish, what would you ask for?
To have all of my student loan debts erased!

5. Do you have a pet, if so what is it?
Oy, yes I have 3 dogs! They are my babies and I love them to death and squish them lots. China Rose is my American Pit Bull Terrier who adopted Seth through our backyard fence 3 years ago. Much to my chagrin, she was pregnant by two different males when we took her in. She gave birth to 9 puppies, 8 of which survived. We initially kept 4 of the puppies when we could not find homes for them. Sadly, 2 of those 4 died from illness leaving us with Moxie and Pixie. Moxie and Pixie both came down with the same illness but survived though Pixie stayed sick with other illnesses most of her life until fairly recently. Moxie is half Black & Tan Coonhound (a hunting dog) and Pixie is half Bloodhound (a search dog) despite being from the same litter of their Pit Bull mother. Pixie is my blind, one-eyed little diva who many of you know. Those of you who do not know the Perils of Pixie, grab a tissue and read about her tragic life.

I do temporarily have my "neph-pup," Roscoe, living with me until my brother moves in to his new house. He and Pixie are the best of friends and play non-stop.

6. What food do you detest?
Cabbage! And it isn't necessarily the taste because I do not mind that, I cannot stand the smell of it cooking! It gags me like you wouldn't believe!

7. If you could step inside the mind of anyone on deviantart, who would it be?
Wow this is a tough one! I think `faestock to learn how she sets up her photos to tell a story in pure raw stock without being manipulated by artists, *Tasastock because she is just awesome and the "bee all and end all of stock!" :giggle: =kirilee as she has epic props to play with and she is great at posing with them and =charligal-stock because seriously, who doesn't want to be a cute little muppet?!

8. When was the last time you drew a picture in the sand?
When I was 14 as that was the last time I actually went to the beach. My brother, his best friends and I, went camping on the beach at Bolivar Peninsula for a week and had a blast!

Seth and I are wanting to do a stock shoot at the beach of a "shipwrecked" theme. Seth loves the book "Robinson Crusoe" by Daniel Defoe and the 1990 film "Shipwrecked" and is the right age to portray the young shipwrecked cabin boy, Haakon Haakonsen. Before we do this shoot I want to make sure Seth is a stronger swimmer as the undertoe is brutal at Bolivar and Galveston Island. Just last week my friends' best employee drowned at Galveston Island leaving behind a pregnant wife.

9. Have you ever sniffed glue?
I plead the 5th Amendment! Okay, just kidding... I have never sniffed glue! However, when I was young I used to love the way gasoline smelled. What can I say, I'm weird!

10. Would you rather be glowy, squishy or made of bubbles?
Can I be a squishy bubble that glows??!!

I tag the following people: :iconpiratelotus-stock::iconcelticstrm-stock::iconhyenacub-stock::iconsemper-iuvenis::iconmagikstock::iconrottenragamuffin::iconfaestock::iconkirilee::iconelandria::icontasastock:

My Questions

1. What artistic skill do you wish you could have?
2. If you could choose which real life animal you would reincarnate as, what would it be?
3. Do you collect anything, if yes, what is it?
4. Do you have any weird quirks that you wish you could lose?
5. What is your favorite stock to art transformation from your own stock being used?
6. If you could meet one person from the past who would it be, and why?
7. Name a character from a book or movie who you would like to be for a week  and what would you do?
8. Which do you like best, deviantART's Fella or Llama?
9. Did you attend college? If yes, what was your degree in?
10. What is your favorite Disney movie, and why?

New Stock Coming...

Tonnes of Old Architecture Stock!

My mother, grandmother and I went on a 5 day/4 night vacation to  San Antonio over the past few days.

San Antonio, Texas is approximately 200 miles west of us who are in Houston, Texas. Situated in the outskirts of the gorgeous Texas Hill Country, San Antonio is a city rich with Texas Independence history.

Among the vast amount of places to see and things to do are the old Spanish Missions and Ripley's Believe It Or Not! Odditorium.

Over the next few days I will be uploading countless stock photos for your artwork. I literally filled my memory card in just one day at only one Spanish Mission! This is a 32GB card that holds 1200 +/- images in RAW format. Needless to say, it will take me a while to sort through, convert into JPEG and then upload to dA!

The first of the new stock to be uploaded are 30 images from Ripley's Believe It Or Not! Odditorium. Ripley's was such an interesting place to visit. I have visited it in the past during a high school choir competition trip to Regionals so I knew what to expect. It was the first visit for my mother and grandmother, however. At Ripley's you are allowed, and even encouraged, to take photos of the exhibits. Sadly, most are behind glass and thus it is difficult to take many that are usable for stock due to smudges, scratches and reflections. It is also very dark inside Ripley's making the use of the dreaded flash required!

The next set of stock to be uploaded will be hundreds of the Spanish Missions. I have taken about 3000 or more old architecture stock from the 5 Spanish Missions, both interior and exterior. These missions date back to the early to mid 1700's when the Spanish Franciscan Friars converted the Native Americans to Catholicism. It will more than likely take me a few days to decide which images to upload since there are so many. It was extremely hot when we visited these missions but the weather was beautiful. It was a bright, sunny day... sadly, that meant that I got sunburned pretty bad the first day as I had forgotten my sunscreen at home.

So, hang tight and keep a look out for some awesome stock from Ripley's and Mission Espada, Mission San Juan, Mission San José, Mission Concepción, and the Alamo! I was able to take interior shots in all the missions except Mission San Juan as it was being renovated and the Alamo which does not allow interior shots.

Three Contest Entries!

Don't forget to read the contest journal!

So far we've received 6 totally amazing entries for our Native American Contest that ends October 10th!

Desperatley Needing Arabic and Chinese Speakers!

Journal Entry: Sun Jan 8, 2012, 1:43 AM

Need fluent Arabic & Chinese speakers to help translate a Cease and Desist letter for art thieves.

Please, if you speak and read Arabic & Chinese fluently, contact me via comment or note! I have had one of my artworks stolen and posted on Arabic and Spanish blogs but my Arabic is rusty. I need someone who speaks and reads the language to help me find the blog owner and translate a cease and desist letter.

I need a Chinese speaker because someone has stolen several of my landscape stock photos and uploaded them to some site called NiPic.com that mirrors to their own blog. I cannot tell if they are selling my images or just offering them for free downloads (both very much against my rules and illegal which could result in a law suit if they are selling my images.).

So, please, if you speak either language, or know someone who does, contact me!

I will be happy to repay you for your services via points or stock packs.

Casey

My Own Newest Artwork

I have been having a creative block, it seems, ever since Jessica, `faestock,
pulled her beautiful stock down and placed it all in storage. Now that she has graciously brought her stock back
out for us, along with some exquisite new stock, it seems my inspiration has returned. Thus, I must believe that Jess is my muse! I
adore her stock plus she is just a darling young woman!
Honestly, what's not to love about her?

Anyway, my latest piece, Hand of Mercy is symbolic of that: My creativity has been compromised when Jessica placed her stock in storage. In my artwork, a young dragon is injured after being taunted by bigger and more popular dragons and is unable to fly and is loosing faith. Jessica brought her lovely stock back out to us, my creativity and inspiration returns. The hope of a hand of mercy may give him the strength and encouragement he needs that will let him fly again!

Sure, it probably sounds corny to you guys, but it meant a lot to me to be able to create art again. And if it took the return of my favorite stocker for that to happen then I am in debt to her. Thus, I have dedicated this piece to Jessica!

New Stock Coming This Weekend

Some of you may have seen the works-in-progress of the Christmas Elf costume my mother was creating for our newest stock shoot. We have since finished the costume and will be doing the Christmas Elf Stock shoot on Friday evening or Saturday. I hope to have the conversions from RAW done and everything ready to upload by Sunday or Monday!

This will be a free stock series. Consider this a Christmas gift to all of our watchers and supporters who have encouraged our new venture into stock model photography!

After the New Year we will be starting fresh with more new stocky goodness for you guys. So, keep a look out, we hope you like what we have planned!

For those who have not seen the progress of the costume, here you go!

X-Mas Elf Stock Preview 2 - Almost There by =DamselStock

Christmas Elf - Costume Completed by =DamselStock

Christmas Elf by =DamselStock
The entire costume, except the striped stockings, was designed and sewn by my very talented mother, ~SewfulCreations! It is made from soft blanket fleece and is very warm. Seth loves it and will probably wear the costume as pajamas after the shoot!

Here is her initial sketched design:
Christmas Elf Costume Concept by ~SewfulCreations

She wanted to know from you guys how you liked the costume and if her final product matched her design close enough. Of course the colors on the drawing are brighter, that was due to the scan. The green and red match the fabric better in person. This was her first time ever designing something and sewing it without a pattern and I am proud to say that it looks absolutely adorable in person, is well made and only took her 3 days to do.

So, go to her account, ~SewfulCreations, and tell her how awesome she did!

Kiriban

For the 1st (FIRST) person to catch my very first kiriban, you will receive a 3 month premium membership!

Catch my 25,000 page view, take a screen capture of it and send it to me! Stash is an easy method of privately sending files between deviants.

The person who gets the closest to the kiriban number will win!

DD Recipient has Finally Credited Jessica!

Journal Entry: Fri Dec 2, 2011, 4:55 AM

For some odd reason today's Vector Art DD recipient used one of the most popular stocks of Jessica, `faestock, as a reference but won't give credit insisting it is their sister. I'm sorry, but we all recognize Jess!!

This is the DD:

And the stock he/she used was one of her Bells Falls stock, #9 to be exact.

Here is the stock:
(It's the one on the right, reversed!)

Man, person's sister and Jess could be identical twins!!

Jess herself even asked to be credited and still the artist claims it is their sister. As if Jess wouldn't recognize herself!?

Credit your stockers people! We provide our services to you guys for free!!

UPDATE

The stock crediting is being worked on as we speak!! `DomiSM, the CV who awarded it, is sorting it out with the artist!

Finale Update

`DomiSM has been conversing via Notes with Jess and I both.

The dA admins (not the CV's but the ones getting paid) do not care about we stockers at all. They won't help us enforce our rules when "artists" break them. I had an "equine artist" break my very blatantly posted rules and the girl refused to remove her crappy deviation and then blocked me and hid my comments. I reported it to dA with a screen shot of the conversation and a link to my rules and they came up with the lame ass excuse that I must have changed my rules after she posted her art which was a flat out lie! Even witnesses vouched for me to the help desk. Still, they closed the ticket and left her ugly equine art up. Extremely disappointing. This experience is why my rules state absolutely no horse rpg site usage. I'm about to revoke all equine usage as that entire community only uses dA for free stock. Pisses me off, we stockers are not Wal-Mart!

Anyway, back to the DD of *The-Morlock. Honestly he should have had his DD revoked until he posted credit and once credit was given he could have received his DD again, but that is my opinion. How he thought his sister was the model is beyond me. I even posted his vector image side by side with Jessica's stock and showed him and he said "Just wait, I ask my sister." In stead of admitting that either he, or his sister, stole artwork and righting his wrong he wanted to be stubborn. A lot of those hidden comments on his DD were from me.

Another thing that got me was how at first he said his sister modeled it. And then he changed his story that his sister drew a sketch that he vectorized. The story changing seriously makes it look like he is lying and is embarrassed he got caught! But, that is speculation. It could be true, but stick with your stories people!

My mom always says "to be a good liar you need to have a good memory!" True words.

As I told *The-Morlock, Jessica has just now brought her beautiful stock back out for artists to use as a year ago she put everything in storage. Let's just say that we all look out for her because we don't want to lose her again. Am I right?

Great work everyone, and congratulations!!

Those who placed 1st-3rd in both categories will be able to choose an exclusive stock pack and I'll send a note individually to those of you who did here shortly!

I'm getting a new camera!!

Yes!!! You read that right!! I just bought my first DSLR camera and cannot wait until it arrives on Wednesday! I got the Canon EOS Rebel T2i with 18 MP!! You can expect loads of new stock (hopefully better in quality)! All we need now is the lighting and backdrop kit and that will cost us $250 for a 3 umbrella light kit plus a chromakey (green) backdrop!

If your wallet is feeling benevolent and you'd like to donate to our lighting fund via PayPal you will receive up to 10 model photos of your direction of Seth with a $10 or more donation. These will be exclusive to you, unless you wish to release them for others to use. Regular stock rules will apply.

Mom got a new sewing machine!

My grandma is giving my mom her Christmukkah (Christmas/Chanukkah) gift early this year... a Singer CG590 Commercial Grade Heavy Duty Sewing Machine! This means we can finally start making these costumes of Seth... lots of leather and thick fabrics! Her old machine committed suicide at the thought of sewing leather! This machine is virtually jam-less! Those of you who sew will understand our excitement there!

My Second DD!!

Journal Entry: Thu Oct 13, 2011, 4:17 PM

I got my second DD today!

I woke up this morning to check my dA message center for anything I might have missed over the night as I always do. So, when I notice my message center had quite a few more messages than normal I got a tad suspicious.

After I get all the yucky crusty stuff out of my eyes (borderline TMI?) I discover that my suspicions were correct! I had received my 2nd DD!

Thank you =redwolf518stock for suggesting it and for `shelldevil for featuring it!

It was such an awesome place to photograph and the footsteps we heard only added another level to the awesomesauce!

I'd love to see you guys make a creepy Halloweenesque artwork with it. I've had many awesome deviations made with it so far!

Here are the other photos from the shoot including a few interior shots not far from where we heard the footsteps!

Judging Criteria

My mother, ~SewfulCreations and I, are both perfectionist Virgos therefore we were not the easiest of judges. We judged the entries based on technical skill, concept, composition and how well the stocks (if a manipulation) were integrated/blended. Ed, the pirate in the photos used, served as our 3rd judge!

We did not show favoritism, so, even if we were friends that did not give you an advantage... sorry!

And now, without further adieu!

THE WINNERS!!

:bulletpink: 1st Place: by :iconmr-ripley: *Mr-Ripley

:bulletpink: 2nd Place: by :iconcaraphae: *Caraphae

Congratulations to ALL winners! Thank you for the few of you who participated; we had few entries but they were absolutely fantastic! I am pleased with my very first time ever holding my own contest. I will definitely be holding another very soon so keep those creative juices flowing!
